Moral judgments under uncertainty: risk, ambiguity and commission bias

چکیده
Abstract Previous research on moral dilemmas has mainly focused decisions made under conditions of probabilistic certainty. We investigated the impact uncertainty preference for action (killing one individual to save five people) and inaction (saving but allowing people die) in dilemmas. reported two experimental studies that varied framing (gain vs loss), levels risk (probability gain loss) ambiguity (imprecise probability information) choice individuals by sacrificing one. found participants preferred actions with (risk/ambiguity) over inaction. Specifically, we precise information (risk) inaction, they modest or high probabilities, especially when had a loss frame. also observed commission bias Study 2. discussed implications decision-making.

Probability judgments under ambiguity and conflict
Whether conflict and ambiguity are distinct kinds of uncertainty remains an open question, as does their joint impact on judgments of overall uncertainty. This paper reviews recent advances in our understanding of human judgment and decision making when both ambiguity and conflict are present, and presents two types of testable models of judgments under conflict and ambiguity. The first type co...
متن کاملMoral Reasoning under Uncertainty
We present a Logic Programming framework for moral reasoning under uncertainty. It is enacted by a coherent combination of our two previously implemented systems, Evolution Prospection for decision making, and P-log for probabilistic inference. It allows computing available moral judgments via distinct kinds of prior and post preferences. In introducing various aspects of uncertainty into cases...
متن کاملDecision making under uncertainty and ambiguity
This paper presents and analyzes the results of two experiments including small decision problems. In the experiments, subjects are asked to choose one of two alternatives for a few thousand times. First experiment, where payoff structure is clearly told, is carried out to explore choice under uncertainty by examining whether expected utility theory holds or not. Second experiment, where subjec...
متن کاملMotion discrimination under uncertainty and ambiguity.
Speed and accuracy of visual motion discrimination depend systematically on motion strength. This behavior is traditionally explained by diffusion models that assume accumulation of sensory evidence over time to a decision bound. However, how does the brain decide when sensory evidence is ambiguous, such as in binocular rivalry? Theories on bistable vision propose that such a conflict is resolv...
متن کاملDo Theories of Implicit Race Bias Change Moral Judgments?
Recent research in social psychology suggests that people harbor ‘‘implicit race biases,’’ biases which can be unconscious or uncontrollable. Because awareness and control have traditionally been deemed necessary for the ascription of moral responsibility, implicit biases present a unique challenge: do we pardon discrimination based on implicit biases because of its unintentional nature, or do ...
